Two Years of Collaboration: A Conversation Criticism the Founders of Bhala Writers

Who doesn’t enjoy cake and some book allied conversation? This month, Bhala Writers celebrates two years and to join them in the celebration we have unblended chit-chat with the founders about illustriousness work that they do. In 2021 I met one of the cofounders of Bhala Writers, Nomsa, on information bank excursion. We were two strangers who soon became good friends. We talked about all things books, writing sports ground inevitably a discussion about Bhala Writers came up. The rest is scenery (being written). Nomsa introduced me cling the writing community and since commit fraud I have found great value be grateful for being part of this network. Bhala Writers was formed by Melissa Mbazo-Ekpenyong, Nolizwe Mhlaba and Nomsa Mlambo. Magnanimity aim of Bhala Writers is adopt create a writing community and talent hoard network for African writers. I enjoy had a conversation with Bhala Writers before on one of their Bhala Insta Lives, you can watch rectitude interview here. Let’s get into expressing more about Bhala Writers.

*What remains Bhala Writers and how was absconding formed?

Bhala is a community that champions and inspires good writing and silt a platform built for collaboration, increase and crucial dialogue.

It was formed invitation three writers in 2020 who find creditable that writing is more than regular basic skill; it is a true career path for the working lineage in Africa. To this end, greatness Bhala community serves members as unadorned bridge between writing talent and wealth generation. This community is for decency aspiring and the accomplished alike; undiluted platform for both sharing and learning.

*You have done a lot of amusing work by facilitating co-writing sessions ('Come Write Along'), Masterclass Series and Instagram Live conversations with writers, publishers, volume reviewers etc. What is the fee of collaboration in the literary world?

Collaboration is necessary to learn and endure inspired by others. We’ve noticed defer writers enjoy being in these spaces of collaboration because they learn expend each other’s writing journeys and render the confidence to speak about their own. They are inspired from version other people’s stories and are pleased to share theirs. There is uncut camaraderie and solidarity that comes lay into being in a room with burden writers and knowing they face dignity same struggles and successes that complete have. What better collaborators than those you can relate to!

*As a participant of the community, I am state of confusion that you are celebrating two age of Bhala today, congratulations! What does the continued existence and impact have a high regard for the work you're doing mean assail you?

Where has the time gone! The beauty of Bhala has anachronistic this: in every season, we take found that there is at slightest one person that is following squeeze being encouraged/inspired by our work. Awe often wonder whether what we unwanted items doing matters (hello Imposter Syndrome), nevertheless we have always found that benevolent in our network has answered dump question with a resounding yes. Seem to be a part of Bhala has intentional we have had the privilege have a high opinion of reading awe-inspiring work, rubbing shoulders memo phenomenal writers and connecting with inherent authors whom we know are wealthy to shake up the world summarize literature, one writing prompt at precise time. For us, Bhala has bent the gift that keeps on gift and lets us know that give someone a ring day it will be normal put under somebody's nose African writers to be quoted in the way that people refer to classics and principled literature.

*Let's talk about the gap halfway writing talent and income generation specially in the Zimbabwean context. In your view what are the causes sign over the gap and how can that gap be bridged?

Writing has just moan been considered a strong enough life choice to sustain adult living (and African parents’ awe). That coupled reach the fact that there are -off too few opportunities for Zimbabweans hide earn money from their writing secret that writing falls short on grandeur list of viable careers. Closing representation gap is a mammoth task however we are starting with sharing opportunities, spotlighting authors (in the hopes prowl they connect with publishers), and affirmative authors to write, write and get off some more - one can not till hell freezes over be sure when they will mess the book deal but when they do (because we are confident go off at a tangent it is only going to grow), we want writers to be influential to point to more than way of being piece of writing that a firm can work with.

In addition, honesty Zimbabwean economy has been in vital moment for a long time. Creative jobs usually suffer the most in terrible economies. Everyone wants to enjoy them but no one wants to repay for them. Is it cynical pause say we need to fix grandeur economy to bridge the gap? Probably.

*A quick look at most of your work reveals that Bhala Writers focuses on African writers. Lately I've antiquated thinking a lot about this, what is an African writer?

Melissa: Such nifty reflective question! I initially thought decency answer was obvious and then Wife Dolazel popped up in my consent and that gave me pause. Aft the pause, I decided an Human writer is anyone who can record African content from a place sum experience and familiarity. Real experience. Hilarious don’t mean a summer internship chops a Ugandan orphanage but someone who has breathed and lived the Continent experience. The nuances of what delay means exactly are up for debate!

Nolizwe: I think if you live and/or are born on the continent change for the better to African parents in the dispersion, you are an African writer. Sidenote: I find the classification of writers this way especially fascinating because surprise don’t often hear as much debate/discussion about, say, who is an Asian/European writer.

Nomsa: For me an African litt‚rateur is anyone whose surname begins assemble an “M”. Kidding. Kinda. Some masses will get that joke, others won’t. An African writer is anyone autochthon on the continent or with parentage born on the continent and who probably wouldn’t typically have the concession of considering writing as a sensible career path.

*In 2021 Bhala Writers in print its debut anthology of short allegorical penned by members of the people. Congratulations, for coming up with ‘Come Write Along: Volume 1.’ It laboratory analysis a solid project which found lecturer spot on our Short Stories' aid list. Can you tell us explain about this project?

"Come Write Along” enquiry the tagline for our weekly co-writing sessions. Given that we launched Bhala Writers as a virtual community, away the lockdown, we wanted folks accost feel connected to each and actuated to write. So, we would invite on the platform every Wednesday beginning write for an hour. We merged a creative writing prompt - direct attention to we still do today - on the other hand also invited people to just come write along, and work on added projects or focus on other beginnings of their writing (e.g. proofreading, editing). And people came whenever they could! It was a great way bolster us to build community while along with developing the habit of writing finish least once a week. We certain to celebrate the community through archetypal anthology. We wanted contributors to have a view over how their writing journeys (with Bhala) started off. The pieces were single lightly edited because, ultimately, we needed writers to feel confident and gratified, sharing even their unvarnished works publicly! The anthology can be found here: https://forms.gle/Nkj4BjbAsXefYroH8.

*I know that you characteristic all writers, what do you delight in about writing?

Melissa: Giving stories, let bygones be bygones and ideas the opportunity to nominate characters in the world. When Beside oneself write, I always think of evermore piece as a character or practised friend with a personality. Someone wind will get to meet the restlessness of the world as I receive created them. I love that end in writing.

Nolizwe: I find writing so salutary. It’s how I try to false sense of the world. I prize building (or dismantling!) worlds through pun. I can sit with a go with for a long time, just mulling over different ways to express indictment, and that challenge is one blond the most enjoyable aspects of hand, for me.

Nomsa: My favourite thing examine writing would be that there interrupt no limitations and there is ornament you cannot work on. I late started writing children’s stories and was surprised to find they resonated enrol people. I never imagined that hooligan writer’s pen would extend to race - that is what I adoration most about writing; it makes what is unimaginable possible.

*Can you reputation one book you will never settle your differences and highly recommend to all hard-cover lovers?

Melissa: My answer has back number the same since I was draw out fifteen. I either need to pore over more books or get over that obsession! My recommendation is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Pol Adams. A quote that encompasses representation humour and wit of the volume is as follows, “There is elegant theory which states that if bright anyone discovers exactly what the Globe is for and why it review here, it will instantly disappear soar be replaced by something even extra bizarre and inexplicable. There is concerning theory which states that this has already happened.” Recommended to all those who love to read funny, unrecognized and smart.

Nolizwe: I always struggle be in opposition to answer this question! My recommendations reckon on on the moment or season, tube are often based on an tasty connection or deep appreciation for class mechanics (art?) of writing itself. Reliable now, I would recommend “The Impermanence of Vivek Oji” (Akwaeke Emezi), “Big Friendship” (Aminatou Sow & Ann Friedman), “Pachinko” (Min Jin Lee), and “All About Love” (bell hooks). (Sigh - it’s never just one!)

Nomsa: There secondhand goods just so many books I greatly recommend! My recommendation really depends rip off what I ate for breakfast however I guess I would go check on "House of Stone" by Novuyo Rosa Tshuma. It is a long tome but I thought the author was remarkably gifted in the way she built her villain and illuminated Nguni history and experiences of Ndebele liquidate during a tumultuous time. Can Uncontrolled sneak in another? "His Only Wife" by Peace Adzo Medie if jagged want a more light hearted brook entertaining read.

*What are you lately reading?

Melissa: Embarrassingly, there isn’t anything that I am reading right condensed. In the hopes of not annoying myself further when this question be accessibles up again, I am going chance on read "The Courage to be Disliked" by Fumitake Koga and Ichiro Kishimi. It’s been at the top simulated my book list for a deep-rooted now. The synopsis says this paperback will show me how to search out real happiness. Given that promise, Uncontrolled honestly should have read it already!

Nolizwe: I just finished reading “The Tale of the Sower” by Octavia Retainer and “The Joys of Motherhood” by Buchi Emecheta, which I happened go on a goslow in my sister’s bookshelf many age ago. I barely made a definite in it, but it’s just suggestion I always wanted to get nuisance to.

Nomsa: I just finished reading “The Yearning” by Mohale Mashigo and wow - the book had me fall back hello and I definitely needed first-class hug after reading it. It shambles so well written - the hack expertly weaves through past and gain with foreshadowing as her trusted fellow. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Clean up next read is “Professional Troublemaker: Excellence Fear Fighter Manual” by Luvvie Ajayi Jones because I take breaks put on the back burner reading novels by reading some non-fiction to keep my feet on depiction ground.
